The Wool
SRS merino sheep have softer, thinner skin and shorter tails than regular merinos, they are fast growing with a high crimp that binds particularly well in the milling process and is renowned for its low itch feel. The SRS Merino sheep are smooth bodied, naturally resistant to fly strike and never need to be mulesed or have their tail docked. A further benefit is that the sheep are easier to shear, and the wool is also very fine quality with long fibres that are beautifully crimped. All this reduces stress for the animals and reduces costs for farmers.
Pure Australian wool
The wool used by Great Southern Yarn is single-origin sourced from Mount Bodangora Merino, a sixth-generation merino stud committed to an ethical and sustainable approach to animal welfare. All the sheep from this farm are non-mulesed. Mount Bodangora is part of the Responsible Wool Standards integrity scheme, an accreditation program to ensure a high standard of care for the sheep and their environment.
Mount Bodangora run a mob of sheep especially for Great Southern Yarn to supply them a longer length fleece of around 100mm or four inches to create the best of yarns.Great Southern Yarn skeins come in an extensive range of natural and hand-dyed colours. The Art Range is inspired by Australian female artists and their paintings, and the Snowy Mountains Series represents a colour range in a cooler palette inspired by the Snowy Mountains region in south-east Australia. Both ranges include painterly variegated, and subtle tonal colourways.
